Location of the Mt. Hicks source

NAME MT. HICKS
LOCATION Mineral County, western Nevada.
CHEMICAL
SOURCE(S)
Mt. Hicks.
DESCRIPTION This large source of high-quality obsidian is located in western Nevada about 10 km east of the Nevada-California border. Numerous prehistoric quarry sites are located at Mt. Hicks and use of obsidian from this source was extensive in east-central California. Characterized artifacts from Mt. Hicks often co-occur with those from the nearby Bodie Hills source, although usually in smaller proportions than the latter source. Small quantities of Mt. Hicks obsidian are also found at numerous sites in the west-central Sierra Nevada Mountains, the Central Valley, and the central coast of California.
