Location of Kane Springs source occurrences

NAME KANE SPRINGS WASH CALDERA VARIETY 2, NV
LOCATION Lincoln County, southeastern Nevada
CHEMICAL
SOURCE(S)
Kane Springs Wash Caldera Variety 2, NV (Kane Springs).
DESCRIPTION Also known as the Kane Springs, Kane Spring, and Kane Springs Wash source. Artifact-quality obsidian is found associated with the Kane Springs volcanic center located in southern Lincoln County, Nevada. Eruptions of more than 100 km3 of rhyolitic ash-flow tuffs from this center about 14 Ma ago formed a 10 x 13 km caldera immediately north and east of Kane Springs Valley and Kane Springs Wash. Geochemical studies of obsidian samples from secondary deposits collected along Kane Springs Wash indicate the presence of two geochemical sources of obsidian in the drainage (i.e., Kane Springs Wash Caldera Variety 1 and Kane Springs Wash Caldera Variety 2).

Few obsidian characterization studies have been carried out in this region and little is known of the prehistoric use of this source. The limited number of artifacts that have been correlated with Kane Springs are primarily from sites located in eastern and southeastern Nevada, the Las Vegas area, and southwestern Utah.

CREDITS Farrel Lytle (Pioche, Nevada), Lynn Johnson, and David Wagner (Sacramento, California) provided geologic samples for trace element analysis that were collected at several locales in the vicinity of Kane Springs Wash.
