Location of the BS/PP/FM source occurrences

NAME BS/PP/FM (BORDWELL SPRINGS/PINTO PEAK/FOX MOUNTAIN)
LOCATION Washoe County, northwestern Nevada.
CHEMICAL
SOURCE(S)
BS/PP/FM (Bordwell Spring/Pinto Peak/Fox Mountain).
DESCRIPTION A composite geochemical source group consisting of the Bordwell Spring, Pinto Peak, and Fox Mountain chemical groups originally identified by Hughes (1986). In early provenance studies, these obsidians were also known as the Homecamp A and B sources. Trace element analyses by Northwest Research of a large number of source samples (N=111) from these source areas indicate that the three source groups are best described as a single rather geochemically-variable source group.

Although obsidian provenance studies in the general source area are not common, artifacts correlated with this chemical group are often identified at archaeological sites in Northeast California and are sometimes found as far south as the Reno and Lake Tahoe area and as far west as the northern Central Valley of California.
