BRITISH COLUMBIA FINE-GRAINED VOLCANIC (FGV) TOOLSTONE SOURCE CATALOG

FGV investigations in British Columbia are restricted to two general areas in southern British Columbia, the Hat Creek area and the Watts Point vicinity. Subsequent provenance studies of artifacts from the two source areas indicates that toolstone from both were utilized as significant prehistoric resources. Trace element investigations also indicate that Watts Point source material is also found in glacial deposits to the south in the San Juan Islands and Olympic Peninsula of Washington. Recent geochemical studies of potential toolstone from the Gulf Islands east of Vancouver Island, however, failed to turn up any Watts Point source material.
