Above: Our earliest and overall most successful FGV characterization research has been at sources and sites in the Lake Tahoe region.

CALIFORNIA FINE-GRAINED VOLCANIC (FGV) TOOLSTONE SOURCE CATALOG

The lab FGV characterization program got its start in the early 1990's with the Lake Tahoe area sources and this region has produced some of our most robust FGV studies to date. Toolstone from the Lake Tahoe sources was intensively used as a prehistoric resource and has been found at many sites in the Sierras and the Reno Basin located directly to the east. The success of the FGV studies in the Tahoe region led us to eventually add other California sources to the lab database.
