the flakes above are typical of those from the Kelly Mountain source. Glass from this source is of marginal artifact quality and was utilized primarily in the local vicinity of the source. Outside of the local source area, glass from Kelly Mountain is only rarely encountered. Obsidian from the source typically contains small phenocrysts and is commonly mahogany and black in color. The trace element composition of glass from this source is similar to that of the East Medicine Lake source (Medicine Lake Volcano area) and the determination of barium is sometimes necessary to accurately distinguish between the two sources. |
