Location of the Franz Valley source

NAME FRANZ VALLEY
LOCATION Franz Valley Area, North Coast Ranges, Napa and Sonoma Counties.
CHEMICAL
SOURCE(S)
Franz Valley.
DESCRIPTION Obsidian nodules associated with ash-flow tuff deposits are found at numerous locations in the Franz Valley area. The color of obsidian from this source is often a distinctive gray or mottled gray and black and may be visually quite different than glass from the nearby Napa Valley obsidian source. Prehistoric use of the Franz Valley glass was apparently limited and chemically characterized artifacts from this source are only rarely encountered.
