| DESCRIPTION
|
This extensive source of high quality obsidian is best described by Hughes (1986). Secondary deposits containing nodules of Buck Mountain obsidian have also been found in the Alturas vicinity to the west of the primary source. The glass from this geochemical source is visually quite variable but is often a distinctive black and mahogany in color. Artifacts from Buck Mountain have been identified throughout northcentral and northeastern California and are occasionally found found at sites in southcentral and southeastern Oregon. Artifacts from this source have also been recognized as far west as the central Oregon Coast and as far south as the Los Angeles area, California.
